Joseph Paxton – the busiest man in England – 9th November 2026
A fast moving and uplifting talk about a remarkable man, Jospeh Paxton; horticulturist,architect, engineer and Liberal Member of Parliament.
Joseph Paxton was appointed head gardener at Chatsworth House at just 23 years of age by the 6th Rule of Devonshire; a position that he would hold for 32 years. During that time, he designed and built the Great Conservatory and the extraordinary Rock Garden, engineered the Emperor Fountain and cultivated exotic and tropical plants including the Cavendish banana.While employed by the Duke he also made major contributions to the landscape and architecture of Buxton. This included the Serpentine walks and the adjoining Pavilion Gardens, and Buxton Railway Station. His architectural masterpiece was the Crystal Palace which he designed for the Great Exhibition of 1851, and for which he was awarded a knighthood by Queen Victoria. He died at the young age of 61 after a very full life
